3300 weapons handed in to nationwide action against knives on the street

Last week, 3300 stabbing, striking and firearms were brought to the police during the national arms surrender campaign. Among other things, machetes, butterfly knives and homemade stabbing weapons were handed in the appropriate barrels at police stations across the country.

The action was mainly aimed at young people, in order to reduce the number of guns on the streets. The ministry reports that more than 2000 knives and 200 other stabbing weapons have been handed over. That is almost half more than was seized by the police last year.

Nearly 500 firearms and 600 other weapons such as ammunition, fake weapons and percussion and punch weapons were also handed in.

‘Drop your knife, do something with your life’

The surrender is part of a campaign by the Ministry of Security and Justice: ‘Drop your knife, do something with your life’. Weapons could be handed over for a week without the owner being punished for it.

The number of young people aged 12 to 17 who are suspected of fatal and serious violent crimes has increased in recent years. The campaign aims to make it clear to young people that it is not normal and dangerous to go out on the street with a weapon.
