Local officials worried that the Dutch fleet of about 400 traditional flat-bottomed sailing vessels was the founder and must be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List to ensure its survival, warned local authorities.
De Telegraaf reported on Wednesday that ships currently rented primarily for tourists and day trips are in dire straits due to the coronavirus crisis and new environmental requirements.
Places on the UNESCO list will protect ships and become a popular post-covid tourist attraction, said Eddie van Hijum, head of Overijssel.
Van Hijum and representatives of Noord-Holland, Flevoland and Friesland are calling on politicians to convince UNESCO of the importance of this “living heritage”. “The Netherlands is the only country in Europe that relies on commercial activity to keep its heritage vessels afloat,” said Van Heijum. “Other countries provide subsidies.”
Flat bottom boat like tjalks And Botter Known as the Brown Fleet because of their traditional brown sails. Most boats have been unavailable since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, and the captain said the promised government support of around € 15 million in August has yet to come true.
More environmental requirements for cleaner motors and wastewater are now threatening to sink the entire sector, state officials fear.
The Ministry of Economy told the paper that additional support packages for the Brown fleet are still being put together and the first payments will be made around the summer. Skippers can also apply for support available to all businesses, a spokesman told the paper.
