ABN AMRO Tennis Tournament again without an audience: ‘Unfortunately, because we have a fantastic field again’ | Sport

Just like last year, the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament will be played without an audience. The 49th edition of the tournament in Rotterdam Ahoy will be held from 5 to 13 February.

The uncertainty about the measures regarding events by then makes it impossible to admit visitors during the largest indoor sports event in the Netherlands.

“It is a huge disappointment. For the players, for us, but especially for the fans,” says Richard Krajicek, the tournament director of the annual tennis event in Rotterdam since 2004. “For the second year in a row we have a fantastic field, where no audience can be present. A plaster on the wound is that the tournament can be followed live all week at Ziggo Sport and that the NOS also gives ample attention.”

The ban on the public at sports competitions will in any case apply until the end of this month. The cabinet will decide on January 25 whether the measures can be relaxed. ,,Even if it were partially allowed last-minute to receive the public, we cannot offer the event that visitors are used to,’ says director Jolanda Jansen of Rotterdam Ahoy. “Hence this step.”

The 49th edition of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam will be so heavily occupied next month that the two breakthrough Dutch top players, Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Grieken, are currently dependent on a possible wild card. Krajicek presented the field of participants earlier this week. Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrej Roeblev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Hubert Hurkacz and Jannik Sinner, among others, are coming to Rotterdam. Last year, Russian tennis player Rublev won in front of empty stands in Ahoy. Anyone who has already bought a ticket for the tournament can save it for next year’s edition.
