Aboutaleb: There was no sign of violence before riots

In the run-up to the riots Friday evening in the center of Rotterdam, there was no sign of “orchestrated violence”. “Otherwise we would have been here with more troops. We misjudged it.” That said mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb on Thursday in the municipal council committee to questions from parties about the disturbances in which the police came so close that they were shot.

The parties wonder how all this could have happened. Five people were injured by bullets. The National Criminal Investigation Department is investigating whether the injuries were caused by police bullets. The disturbances broke out on the Coolsingel where a protest against the corona measures was to take place.

Aboutaleb pointed out that there are many unannounced demonstrations in the city and that they usually go off without a hitch. On Friday, he said, it became clear that things would be different when officers approached people and were attacked and help from the mobile unit was needed. “When it turned out that the help of the riot police was needed, two bomb threats also came in. This was intended to draw police capacity away from the center. We ignored it. It says something about the organized nature of that evening.”
