One killed in fallen tree in Harlem during poly storm

A Harlem woman was seriously injured Wednesday morning after a tree fell on her car during Storm Polling. She later died from her wounds. Her death was the first fatality associated with the storm, which brought gusts of wind up to 146 kilometers per hour to the Netherlands and sustained record high winds for a summer storm.

Police, firefighters and paramedics attempted to reach the crash site on Marniche Street at around 8:40 am, but a trauma team was also dispatched to the scene. The 51-year-old woman was in the car with another person and was not injured in the incident.

After being released from the car, bystanders attempted to resuscitate the woman. Resuscitation efforts were taken over by first responders. A trauma team transported the woman by helicopter to a local hospital, but resuscitation attempts failed, officials said.

Around the same time, another incident occurred in Amsterdam, in which two others were also injured. In each case a tree fell over the car. One of the two lost consciousness after fleeing the car. Their condition was not lifted.

The infrastructure agency Amsterdam’s Rijkstag led a call early Wednesday morning urging people to stay off the roads due to the dangerous conditions. Multiple NL alerts were issued in North Holland, including Amsterdam and Haarlem, advising people to stay indoors. However, these alerts were sent near 9:00 AM.
