Although Heerenveen had been instructed by trainer Johnny Jansen to play a lot in the duels, it barely got to the ball in the first minutes. The first chance was therefore for Ajax. Dusan Tadic nicely lobbed the ball to Sébastien Haller, who then went over in one go. At the second chance it was hit. Antony put the ball perfectly on the head of Davy Klaassen who nodded the ball in the far corner.
Until that moment, little had come of the Frisian battle plan and although Heerenveen showed itself a little more after the opening goal with a few threatening moments, the next big opportunity was also for Ajax. Antony just curled his shot down the wrong side of the post. Moments later, Klaassen aimed just over from the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder thought a little later to make the 0-2 with a tick, but Tadic appeared to have made hands in the run-up to the goal.
After exactly 45 minutes, there was a first goal from Heerenveen. Siem de Jong tried to surprise Maarten Stekelenburg with a lob volley, but the ball hit the roof of the goal. Yet the only real problem for Ajax in the first half was that Daley Blind got injured, he was replaced by Sean Klaiber at half time.
Although that substitution changed Ajax’s rearguard in three places, the game image did not change immediately after the tea break. After Erwin Mulder came out, Klaassen was given the opportunity to play, but his attempt fell well wide of the empty goal. The midfielder also dropped out injured moments later. His replacement Mohammed Kudus received a penalty kick after a foul by Pawel Bochniewicz. Tadic convincingly shot the ball towards the intersection.
A minute later there was the first big opportunity for Heerenveen. Mitchel van Bergen escaped the attention of Edson Alvarez, but the wing attacker did not get the ball past Stekelenburg. On the other hand, Haller also shot Erwin Mulder. After that it remained Ajax that was dominant and fifteen minutes before the end it also became 0-3. Haller extended on David Neres, who fired the ball under the goalkeeper.
Ajax was then able to play the match quietly. Erik ten Hag also decided to give some players a rest with a view to the full schedule in the coming weeks. FC Groningen awaits in the Eredivisie on Sunday.
