Ajax has closed the practice campaign with a big win over Leeds United. Despite the absence of a number of basic players, the national champion simply won a 4-0 victory in the dress rehearsal for the squatter against PSV.
If Ajax was accurate against RB Leipzig (1-1) on Saturday within four minutes, the team of coach Erik ten Hag against Leeds United already managed to get the opening goal after a hundred seconds. Thanks to Luke Ayling, who let Davy Klaassen steal the ball. Ajax’s midfielder then pushed the ball into the empty goal.
In contrast to the test case in Grödig, Austria, Ajax gave the lightning start against the Premier League club a suitable follow-up. The national champion dominated and created plenty of opportunities.
For example, when Perr Schuurs received the ball from star Noussair Mazraoui and crossed the field. That adventure ended with the second Amsterdam goal. Schuurs outwitted keeper Illan Meslier, his opponent at the end of May when he defeated the Dutch Juniors at the European Championship Young France, sliding with a lob: 2-0.
The frenzied mandekker was relieved halfway through by Jurriën Timber. Then Ajax had already secured the practice victory. Ryan Gravenberch had the more than 20,000 present spectators cheer for the third time with a hard shot from a distance a few minutes before half time.
Besides Schuurs, Steven Berghuis also stayed behind in the dressing room after the first half. After his fraught move from rival Feyenoord, his substitute against Bayern Munich and starting place against Leipzig, he received a nice welcome at his unofficial entrance in the Johan Cruijff-Arena. With an energetic performance, the much-discussed purchase then showed its business card.
In the second half, both coaches made changes. For example, a handful of youngsters were allowed to show themselves to the supporters. David Neres, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp and Lisandro Magallan, who are nominated to leave, were also among the substitutes. Danilo, who was loaned out to Twente last season, used his return to the Arena to show – just like in Austria – that he has a nose for the goal. With a diagonal shot he determined the final score at 4-0.
Is Ajax ready for the fight against PSV? No, according to the coach, the basic team still lacks fitness for that. In addition to the already injured Mohammed Kudus and Zakaria Labyad, Maarten Stekelenburg, Nicolás Tagliafico and Devyne Rensch were also missing from the match selection.
Before the final part of the practice campaign, Ten Hag repeated once again that a handful of internationals are still far from the required top condition. ,,At the moment our team is not fit to play the way I have in mind,” Ten Hag told Ziggo. “In the end we will have to find a way to win.”
