Ajax will meet Swiss leader Young Boys in the Europa League

Ajax takes on BSC Young Boys from Switzerland in the eighth final of the Europa League. The UEFA draw showed that on Friday. Young Boys is at the top of the Swiss league and managed to get through in the Europa League by eliminating the German Bayer Leverkusen of former Ajax coach Peter Bosz. Ajax probably plays a home game first. The exact dates will be announced later by UEFA.

The Amsterdam club qualified for the eighth final on Thursday after Erik ten Hag’s team was too strong for the French leader Lille in two games. In France Ajax won 1-2 through two late goals from Dusan Tadic and Brian Brobby. In the second match in Amsterdam, Lille was a lot stronger and Ajax had a hard time for a long time. Despite this, the team from Amsterdam again won 2-1.

The eighth final with Young Boys is a reunion for Ajax with former attacker Miralem Sulejmani. The Serbian winger came over from SC Heerenveen for more than sixteen million euros in 2008 and was therefore regarded as the most expensive purchase in Ajax’s club history for a long time. In the Johan Cruijff Arena, Sulejmani could never fully live up to the high expectations. Via the Portuguese Benfica he ended up at Young Boys in 2015.

If Ajax manages to beat Young Boys in two matches, the team from Amsterdam will qualify for the quarter finals of the Europa League. The leader of the Eredivisie reached the final of the tournament in 2017, led by then trainer Peter Bosz. In the final battle Ajax lost 0-2 to Manchester United. The English top club also hopes to reach the final this edition. In the eighth final, Manchester United will meet the Italian top club AC Milan.
