Thanks to Goran Pandev’s goal in the play-off game against Georgia, North Macedonia qualified for the European Championship for the first time in history, a feat they are proud of in Pandev’s hometown of Strumica. “The crown on everything is this European Championship”, says his father.
Not only in Strumic, but throughout Macedonia people feel sympathy for the national football team. “We’re not just playing for ourselves, but for the whole of Macedonia,” Pandev said. “We will play with our hearts.”
North Macedonia will make its European Football Championship debut at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening with a match against Austria, to the delight of the North Macedonian striker. “Thank goodness let’s get started. We can’t wait to play.”
In the last group match in group C, on June 21, Pandevs North Macedonia will meet the Dutch national team.
