The number of corona cases has increased by 5903 in the past 24 hours. That is 1,569 more than the average for the past seven days. The increase in the number of new corona cases is therefore continuing, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). Yesterday, the number of infections increased by 5223. It was the first time in three months that the number of infections exceeded 5,000 in one day.
In the past 24 hours, there were ten new deaths from corona infection. Not all those people need to have died in the past 24 hours, because it sometimes takes a while before a death is reported to RIVM.
All time low
Yesterday, the number of infections reached a new low: then the number of new corona cases in one day exceeded 5000 for the first time since the end of July. Then 5223 people were told that they had contracted corona.
The weekly average has been above the limit of 4000 since this week. A week ago, that average was still at 2927 new cases per day.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) is closely monitoring a mutant of the Delta variant of the coronavirus. Experts had recently reported that this so-called subvariant is slowly spreading in the United Kingdom.
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has announced that the new mutation has also been circulating in the Netherlands for some time. Since mid-August, the mutant’s share has been 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the infections that are examined in the so-called germ surveillance, which monitors the spread of virus variants.
“That percentage has remained stable since then,” said a spokesperson. He emphasizes that mutants of corona variants often arise. “And whether this mutation is more contagious, or whether it is easier to circumvent the vaccines, is difficult to say.”
Despite the increasing trend, the German health authorities have not yet placed our country on the list of high-risk countries. The increase in the number of confirmed infections in the Netherlands per 100,000 inhabitants over a week could be a reason for this in the system of the German health authorities. But the risks are also weighed up with other factors, or the authorities will wait another week.
As a result, the Dutch overseas territories in Germany continue to be classified as a high-risk area, but the rest of our country is not. Travelers traveling to Germany from a high-risk area face more restrictions. Not only must they have a corona pass with them, but they must also register their trip with the government in advance via the internet. Once in Germany they have to self-isolate. The rule is ten days of isolation, but it can be deviated from after a day by having a corona test done that gives a negative result.
