The hit musical The Prom comes to the Netherlands. Production house De Graaf and Cornelissen Entertainment will bring the performance, which previously drew full houses on Broadway, to the Dutch theaters in the autumn of 2022. This gives the Netherlands a first: it is the first country outside the US where the musical will be shown.
In The Prom a lesbian girl in conservative Indiana wants nothing more than to go to the big prom party with her secret girlfriend. When the media gets wind of the case, a group of down-and-out New York actors decide to help the girl revive their own dozed-off careers.
The performance received six Tony nominations on Broadway. The musical was also recently adapted into a Netflix movie, starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden and Kerry Washington in the lead roles.
Diversity and happy ending
It is not yet known who will play the leading roles in the Dutch version, according to producer Hans Cornelissen. Cornelissen and his artistic partner Ruud de Graaf say they very consciously choose to look to the future with hope in this corona crisis and to set up major theater productions.
“In addition to well-known classics such as Evita and Titanic, we also want to bring productions that have not yet been seen in the Netherlands”, says Cornelissen. “It was a great wish to bring this performance to the Netherlands now, precisely because this typical musical comedy has everything: over the top, diversity, glitter & glamor, a happy ending and a great soundtrack.”
