An oeuvre prize, but a black blanket still hangs over Van Dik Hout: ‘A real disaster’ | show

Unintentionally, it is very symbolic. Four of the five members of Van Dik Hout will gather this Monday afternoon in café De Koe in Amsterdam for a trip to Berlin. Only the drummer is missing. That has recently been Ferry Kunst (33), coming from Indian Askin, which was dissolved last year. Art was taught at the conservatory in Amsterdam by Oscar Kraal, his predecessor. The man who had only been behind the drum kit at Van Dik Hout since 2018, died last spring.

The fact that Kunst misses the roll call today is because he prefers the train to the cars with which the other band members drive to Germany to record a single. We dance on the waves is about farewell and reunion. The lack of Kraal still hangs like a black blanket over the tire. In the middle of the corona time, in which the band members could not or hardly see him because of the health risks, Kraal was demolished by pancreatic cancer. He died on April 1 at the age of 50.

,,That was a complete disaster”, says singer Martin Buitenhuis (52). ,,The upheaval in his family and children, terrible.” In the last phase the band members tried as best they could to see him. Sometimes outside, in small groups, sometimes via video calling. There came a time when Kraal was too weak to play the drums, but the band had to take performances into account if the corona rules were relaxed. Buitenhuis: ,,Because Ferry’s band had ended, he was available. What I personally like is that Oscar still knew that Ferry would succeed him.”
