According to a monthly report from the Chamber of Commerce, the number of starting entrepreneurs rose by 9 percent in June compared to the same month a year earlier. Since March this year, there has been a continuous increase on an annual basis.

In health care in particular, the Netherlands has many more starters than a year ago. In June, this concerned 2,215 starting entrepreneurs. Home care is also a popular sector to start a business in.

According to Erik Stam, Professor of Strategy, Organization and Entrepreneurship at the University of Utrecht, there are once again sufficient opportunities for independent entrepreneurship. According to him, the number of starters in home care is catching up after a corona dip in 2020.

The number of new webshops in June was more than a third lower in June than in the same month in 2020. The Chamber of Commerce notes that the number of new webshops has been declining for some time. In the retail sector as a whole, there were 30 percent fewer starting entrepreneurs.

“Relaxing measures”

“With the relaxation of the measures, physical shopping becomes more possible, and we see the number of new webshops decrease,” says Stam. The professor also notes that it is striking that the retail sector has fewer starters across the board, including physical stores. “It seems that fewer new companies are returning to the shopping streets.”

In almost all provinces there was an increase in the number of starters. Limburg was the exception to this. There, the number of starters fell by 7.5 percent on an annual basis.

The Chamber of Commerce also notes that the number of bankruptcies remains low. In June, there were 118 companies, which represented a 43 percent year-on-year decline. According to Stam, government support measures play a role here.
