Another increase: today almost 9,200 new corona infections | Inland

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment reports 9,182 new infections in the past 24 hours. That is the highest number since the peak of the second wave in late October.

The number of new corona cases has risen for the third day in a row. Yesterday, 8,894 positive tests were reported. On Thursday, the RIVM reported almost 8,800.

The number of deaths increased by 53 last 24 hours. That does not mean that all these people died last 24 hours. Such information is sometimes passed on a little later. To date, 1,723 Covid patients have been hospitalized; 42 more than yesterday. There are 481 corona patients on the ic, nine more than the day before. In the past 24 hours, fourteen patients have been moved between the regions, three of which are IC patients.

Emergency consultation

A large part of the cabinet will meet tomorrow for an inserted corona consultation in the Catshuis. Sources in The Hague state that the cabinet is planning extra measures, because the contamination figures remain poor. The ministers most involved in the corona crisis will be present at the meeting. They will be updated by experts, such as RIVM director Jaap van Dissel. The Catshuisberaad starts in the morning. “We have to take into account new measures,” it sounds. Earlier Prime Minister Rutte mentioned, for example, the closure of school buildings or shops, excluding supermarkets.

During the consultation, it must also be decided when the cabinet will present the new interventions. In any case, that will be this week, perhaps even Tuesday. During the last press conference, the prime minister already anticipated that extra measures could be taken before Christmas, if things continued to go badly. And that’s it.

Diederik Gommers critical

Between Thursday morning and Friday morning, 8,894 positive tests were reported to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). On Thursday, the RIVM reported almost 8800 new cases. These are the highest numbers since late October, the first days after the peak of the second wave. The number of infections per week, which provides a better indication than daily figures, also showed a sharp increase. In the last week this involved 51,000 people who tested positive, against just over 35,000 in the week before.

The cabinet instituted a partial lockdown in mid-October to prevent the spread. Since then, among other things, the catering industry has closed and the permitted group sizes have been reduced.

If I have any doubts in an IC for so long, a patient has already died

Diederik Gommers

Experts have long been calling that the cabinet must intervene harder to keep the virus under control. However, the ministers have emphasized that they will continue to save people during the Christmas season. Diederik Gommers, national IC chairman and OMT member, states in an interview with this site today that the cabinet is slowly adopting the virus. “I’m an impatient intensivist, of course, but I don’t get it: first there is a cabinet meeting on Friday, on Sunday in the Catshuis there will be consultation again and then it has to take until Tuesday until a decision is made that will take effect later. The virus does not take this into account. If I have any doubts in an IC for so long, a patient has already died. “

German intervene

There is also an emergency meeting tomorrow about the deteriorating corona situation in Germany. German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet with state leaders on Sunday about tightening up corona policy. Insiders say that, among other things, it will be discussed whether shops should also close in the run-up to the Christmas holidays.

A partial lockdown has been in effect for about a month and a half in Germany. Catering establishments are closed, but schools and shops did not have to close. Despite these measures, tens of thousands of new infections are reported every day. This also increases the pressure on politicians to intervene.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German RIVM, today reported 28,438 new corona infections. Another 496 corona patients died.
