The Council of State has decided that the municipality of Veenendaal does not have to cooperate with the establishment of an Islamic primary school in that location. The Al Amana Schools Foundation had already submitted several applications to the municipality. These applications concerned the inclusion of an Islamic primary school in the plan of schools in the period 2021-2023. This is reported by the Gelderlander.
It is unlikely that the school will meet the foundation standard of 318 students. There is already an Islamic primary school in Ede and half of the expected number of students already attend school there.
That was actually the reason for the municipality to reject the application. The Al Amana Schools Foundation therefore approached the Council of State, which has now agreed with the municipality of Veenendaal.
This statement does not mean that there will never be an Islamic school in Veenendaal. “This was the last time they could apply directly to the municipality. The rules have changed and now this must be requested from the minister,” said alderman Marco Verloop.
Islamic primary schools
The Foundation already has Islamic primary schools in Ede, Zwolle, Zeist and Hoorn.
