Man arrested in Poland over Anne Frank’s anti-Semitic message

The 41-year-old suspect, following an intensive investigation in the wake of an incident in early February, found texts suggesting the Jewish teenager was not keeping a diary during World War II. Arrested when she was projected onto the side of a museum to honor her memory.

“The suspect was quickly identified after the shooting,” Dutch police said in a statement.

“It was later discovered that the suspect had left for Poland shortly after the screening,” they said.

Dutch detectives traveled to Poland on Monday to be present when the suspect’s home was searched and he was arrested.

“We speculate that the man lives in Poland,” police told AFP, without giving further details.

“Amsterdam prosecutors have asked for the man to be extradited to the Netherlands,” police added.

The incident shocked many in a country where Dutch involvement in the deportation of tens of thousands of Jews to Nazi concentration camps remains a sensitive issue.

The Anne Frank House Museum, which preserves the canal-side house where the Jewish Frank family hid from the Nazis, expressed “shock and disgust” at the time.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the incident was “reprehensible”, adding that “there is no room for anti-Semitism in our country”.

The projected text, “Anne Frank, inventor of the ballpoint pen,” refers to the disjointed scraps of paper found in a famous teenage diary in the 1980s.

Writing on the sheets was done with a pen that was used only after the war. This is a fact used by right-wing anti-Semites to show that the diaries are fake.

However, numerous fact checks confirmed that the sheets were most likely published in diaries left by researchers in the early 1960s.

Dutch public broadcaster NOS said it “in no way doubts the authenticity of the diary”.

Anne Frank and her family hid in a secret annexe of the house for two years after the Nazi occupation of Holland in 1940, before being captured in a 1944 raid.
