Badgers can tunnel under tracks and cause more trouble for trains

Train services between Den Bosch and Eindhoven have been canceled for at least the next week due to: Damage caused by badgers Crawl under the railroad tracks.

The badgers are digging tunnels under the railroad near the village of Esch, forcing the line to close due to the danger of collapse.

“Badgers are a protected species and require a permit to act,” a Prorail spokesperson told local broadcaster Omrope Brabant. I can not do it.”

The route is an important north-south connection used by 16 passenger trains an hour, as well as freight trains. Passengers traveling between Utrecht and Eindhoven or Limburg must use alternative routes or take a bus.

Earlier this month, the badger halted train service between two Frisian towns by digging holes under the rails, destabilizing them.

Its Badger set near Morkvelam consists of a network of tunnels with dozens of entrances that can collapse under the weight of passing trains, Prorail said at the time.

ProRail Chief Executive John Voppen said the track operator is now in emergency talks with the Ministry of Infrastructure after two shutdowns in one week. “Having space to move faster is in the interests of travelers and rail companies,” he said.
