Belgian football clubs unanimously behind the arrival of BeNeLiga | Foreign football

The Belgian football clubs from the Pro League are unanimously behind the arrival of a combined competition with the Netherlands, the BeNeLiga. Five clubs from Belgium and six from the Netherlands have been talking to each other since 2019 about the possible set-up of a joint football competition. Based on research by Deloitte, they saw enough reason to seriously discuss the set-up of a BeNeLiga.

From the Netherlands, Ajax, AZ, FC Utrecht, Feyenoord, PSV and Vitesse are closely involved in the process, Belgium is represented by Anderlecht, Club Brugge, AA Gent, Racing Genk and Standard Liège. Research by Deloitte showed that the new competition would potentially increase the value of the clubs that would play in such a BeNeLiga. The entire Belgian and Dutch professional football would also benefit from it both sportively and financially. For example, the total income would increase by about 300 million to 1.3 billion euros.

Ambition

The members of Pro League, the organization responsible for the highest Belgian league, unanimously supported an agreement in principle on “the direction for the future ambition” for professional football in Belgium on Tuesday. “This future ambition is based on respect for the sporting aspirations for the top clubs and the need for economic stability for the other professional clubs. There is unanimous support to give the possible realization of the Beneleague every opportunity. The management of the Pro League will from now on take an active role in this, ”said a statement.

The eleven initiators entered into talks with UEFA last year, among other things to discuss the possible distribution of European tickets if it comes to a combined competition. Due to the corona pandemic, the process is taking longer than initially intended.

The umbrella supporters associations in the Netherlands and Belgium have spoken out against the arrival of a BeNeLiga. Not only do they have practical objections, such as longer travel distances, but they are also afraid that their ‘own’ football culture will be damaged.
