BMW will enter series production at the end of next year with its most powerful M model in history. The newly unveiled BMW Concept XM concept model broadly shows what we can expect. In fact, the front view already hints at the new design direction for all future BMW models in the luxury segment.
The BMW XM will be built at the US plant in Spartanburg from the end of 2022. The US is also the main market for this new model. The BMW M division turns half a century next year and this is the first fully standalone M model since the iconic BMW M1. The BMW XM will be sold exclusively as a plug-in hybrid and only as an M model.
The hybrid will have an electric range of up to 80 km. In this version, the newly developed M Hybrid drive system combines a V8 petrol engine with an electric motor – together good for a maximum power of 550 kW (750 hp) and a maximum torque of 1,000 Nm.
Concept XM must push the boundaries
“The BMW Concept XM represents a whole new perspective on the high performance segment,” said Dutchman Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. “This model underlines the potential of BMW M GmbH to break with conventions and push boundaries, to offer fans of the brand ultimate driving pleasure.”
“The design of the BMW Concept XM is an extravagant statement by BMW M at the heart of the luxury segment,” added Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design. “The XM has a unique personality and embodies an expressive lifestyle like no other BMW model.”
In the cockpit, a striking carbon fiber surface with woven copper wire provides a sporty and exclusive backdrop for the displays, air vents and controls. The Curved Display from the BMW iX also returns in the design. A luxurious, lounge-like atmosphere has been created in the back. The headliner has a three-dimensional prism structure: the combination of indirect and direct lighting creates an optical relief.
Incidentally, the name XM has already been used for a car before. Citroën also had an XM in the model program at the end of the last century. Autoweek reports that the two manufacturers have had consultations about the use of the model name, to avoid a fight.
