Boost for Raymond van Barneveld on his way to World Cup darts: ‘I am very emotional’ | darts

Raymond van Barneveld secured his participation in the Grand Slam of Darts yesterday. An absolute boost for the five-time world champion. ,,I’m very emotional”, said the former winner of the major tournament. “I am very, very happy.”




Van Barneveld showed his best side during the qualifying tournament yesterday. Thanks to victories over Alan Soutar, Danny Noppert and Brendan Dolan, he can be admired again from next Saturday at a major television tournament. This is followed by participation in the Players Championsship Finals. So can’Barney‘ just in time to gain a lot of rhythm towards the World Cup darts, which starts on Wednesday 15 December.

Van Barneveld has fond memories of the Grand Slam of Darts. The former postman won the tournament in 2012. At the time, he defeated compatriot Michael van Gerwen in a thrilling final (16-14 in legs). “That is such a special memory for me. I can’t wait to play again.”


The Grand Slam of Darts starts next Saturday in Wolverhampton and lasts until Sunday 21 November. In total, 32 darts players compete for the top prize of about 145,000 euros. The tournament starts with a group system, after which the numbers 1 and 2 from each eight groups qualify for the knockout phase.

Van Barneveld was paired with two-time world champion Gary Anderson, Michael Smith and Joe Davis in the draw. Next ‘Barney‘ For the Netherlands, only Van Gerwen makes an appearance. The current number 3 in the world is up against Joe Cullen, John Henderson and Lisa Ashton.
