Marit Bouwmeester did not start her Olympics well. The reigning Olympic sailing champion in the Laser Radial class finished 21st in the opening race in Tokyo. The victory went to Spain’s Cristina Pujol Bajo.
Bouwmeester has regularly visited Japanese waters in recent years and was one of the first sailors to land in Japan for these Games. After her Olympic triumph at Rio 2016, she didn’t go on holiday, but immediately looked for the next Olympic location to train and sail a race.
But all the knowledge gained from the port of Enoshima, where the sailors take action, and the almost maniacal preparation turned out to be worth little on Sunday morning. Bouwmeester is currently on 21 points.
Ten races + medal race
The second and final race of today will start at 6.20 am. In total Bouwmeester and his associates will sail ten races, plus a medal race.
It is important for them to score as few points as possible, with the worst of the ten results being crossed out at the end. The number one gets one point, the number two gets two points and so on. In the medal race, the points are doubled.
