In Groningen, Rijkswaterstaat has started removing the bridge section that a German cargo ship collided with last night. This led to extensive damage to the bridge, which can no longer be opened or closed. The bridge is crooked and the traffic light has broken down.
Yesterday evening the preparations for the removal of the bridge deck started. Two cranes have been installed to lift the bridge deck. Rijkswaterstaat hopes that it will slowly bend back to its original state.
If this does not happen, the bridge deck will be rotated on its axis and placed on a pontoon. The waterway will then be cleared and cyclists and pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge again. After that, it is examined what the best approach is to clear the bridge further. That will certainly take the rest of the day, says Rijkswaterstaat at RTV Noord:
