In a survey by the Kyodo news agency, almost 60 percent of the Japanese indicate that the sporting event should be cut. The corona pandemic, which is still not under control in Japan, is cited as the main reason for canceling the Games.

A minority of 25 percent thinks that the Games can still take place, but without an audience. Only 12 percent believe that the event can take place with a limited number of spectators.

The Games will start in two months, on July 23. The International Olympic Committee and the Japanese organization are continuing the preparations and planning an event that must take place under strict hygiene regulations. Foreign spectators are not welcome anyway, a decision about admitting the Japanese will be taken in June.

The growing aversion has already diminished and is increasing in recent months, as Japan is suffering from a growing number of infections. More than 350,000 people recently signed a petition calling for the Tokyo Olympics to be canceled.

According to initiator Kenji Utsunomiya, a 74-year-old lawyer who has tried several times in the past to become governor of Tokyo, it is not responsible to host the global sports event in Japan next summer because of the corona woes. What is a factor is the slow vaccination in Japan. Only 1 percent of the 125 million inhabitants have recently been vaccinated.
