Prime Minister Rutte emphasizes that it is only a thought within the cabinet. He does say that he has started to think differently about this subject. “First, for example, we allowed sports, and then it was the turn of museums or cafes.” He can imagine that, for example, a restaurant opens for a few tables and the hairdresser opens for a limited number of people per day.
This strategy could also increase understanding among Dutch companies. The opening per sector leads to irritation, Rutte knows. “It’s frustrating. Why open shops and close restaurants? Why some people, why not others?”
The prime minister wants to make it clear that the hairdresser and the restaurant are just random examples. “Philosophizing out loud is always dangerous in a TV show. People then think; that’s what it will be. And it really isn’t.”
For the time being there are also no easing in sight, only the primary schools will open from Monday next week.
This new strategy was discussed for the first time last Monday during the weekly coalition meeting. VVD party chairman Dijkhoff made the proposal and the other parties responded positively.
