Turnover from the catering industry was almost as high in the third quarter as before the outbreak of the corona crisis. Revenues rose sharply in July, August and September thanks to the relaxation of the corona measures, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Hotels are suffering the most from the pandemic.

Food and beverage outlets and hotels were among the hardest hit by the corona crisis, as they often had to remain closed or international guests stayed away. The difference in turnover between the second and third quarters of 2021 is therefore large. According to Statistics Netherlands, turnover increased by almost 54 percent between those two periods. Compared to the third quarter of 2020, the catering industry turned over 15 percent more.

Statistics Netherlands also looked at the different types of catering companies. Caf├ęs recorded almost 90 percent more turnover in the third quarter than in the previous three months. At restaurants, revenues increased by almost three quarters. Fast food restaurants, snack bars and cafeterias were still able to serve many people during lockdowns because takeout and delivery was often allowed. They saw sales rise by just over 18 percent between the two quarters.

Compared to the second quarter, the turnover of hotels increased the fastest. Their turnover doubled. But at the same time, they are the furthest from the income they had before the outbreak of the pandemic. Compared to the third quarter of 2019, revenues were almost a quarter lower.
