President of the House of Representatives Bergkamp wants to provide better support to MPs who are threatened. A team that helps MPs file a report is being expanded and Bergkamp wants to offer parliamentarians courses to deal with a threat, she tells the ANP.
The number of registered threats has increased in recent years and preliminary figures for 2020 also show an increase. Bergkamp now wants to make “a statement”.
“Just act normal, I would say. And also think before you post something on social media,” she emphasizes to the news agency. In addition to online threats, she also says that threatening letters are also coming in.
‘Do what it takes’
The chairman does not yet know exactly how many people need to come to assist MPs and advise on security issues: “We do what is necessary.”
The courses that she wants to offer the representatives of the people will cover, among other things, dealing with threats, but also protecting private addresses, for example.
There is also an evaluation of the safety of the House of Representatives itself. Since this summer, the parliament has been housed in a temporary building.
