Thousands take part in The Hague Ocean Race

Thousands flock to The Hague on Sunday and the following day for the Ocean Race, the world’s largest sailing race. The penultimate stage of the race ends at Scheveningen. The first ship is scheduled to arrive between 1:00pm and 3:30pm on Sunday. King Willem-Alexander will also attend.

This year The Hague will serve as a stopover for the Ocean Race. During the stop in The Hague, the race will be held at the port of Scheveningen. Performances, sailing simulators and shopping are also available. According to the organization’s website, the ship and its crew can be visited free of charge during the harbor races on the Scheveningen docks and offshore until next Thursday. Next week the yacht will leave for the final leg. They will then depart Scheveningen and set course for Goal near Genoa, Italy.

Organizers and the city of The Hague are taking precautions due to the expected heat. For example, visitors can fetch free drinking water, and sunscreen is also available at first aid stations. Through the public information system, visitors are being urged to stay hydrated and evacuate.

The last sailing race ended in The Hague in June 2018. Around 88,000 people watched the finish line at the time, and his entertainment program drew more than 200,000 visitors.

The World Sailing Championships are held off Scheveningen in August.
