The French justice this afternoon demanded four months’ probation against the woman who caused a huge crash during the last Tour de France. That is a lighter sentence than expected.
The Tour visitor was suspected of ‘not intentionally injuring people’. This carries a penalty of 1 year in prison or a fine of 15,000 euros. The international cycling federation demanded a symbolic fine of 1 euro.
The 31-year-old woman was present at the first stage of the Tour de France on June 26. Standing by the side, with one foot on the verge and one on the asphalt, she held up a large sign. She pointed that at the TV cameras. As a result, she did not see the peloton approaching behind her.
German rider Tony Martin hit the board hard. He fell and the woman got a big whip. After Martin, one rider after another fell down. Within a minute, the tarmac was covered with a literal mountain of dozens of bikes and dozens of riders.
Cyclists were injured and a few were forced to abort the cycling lap. Martin later decided to stop cycling, partly because of the lack of safety.
The woman’s sign read: Allez Opi Omi, which was a German greeting to her grandparents who she knew were watching the tour on TV.
The incident sparked a storm of outrage. The 31-year-old woman received a torrent of curses, reproaches and insults on social media. Calls were also made to do something violent to her.
After four days, she turned herself in to the police. Then she was charged. “The woman herself called it stupidity,” prosecutor Camille Miansoni said at the time. “She’s ashamed. She was frightened by what came next. She’s scared by all the media attention.”
The police even issued a warning. “The woman is vulnerable. Let’s not let it turn into a public lynching.”
She was due to appear in court today. A request to keep the trial behind closed doors was denied. The judge will rule on December 9.
