Since the start of the corona pandemic, most football clubs have had to contend with corona cases in the selection. The virus has struck very hard at Belenenses this week. The Portuguese club had so few players left that against Benfica there were not eleven, but nine players on the line-up sheet.
No fewer than thirteen players were found to be infected with the corona virus after a test and Thibang Phete was also not present due to a suspension. As a result, trainer Filipe Cândido, who has also tested positive himself, had only seven field players and two keepers at his disposal. Reserve goalkeeper Álvaro Ramalho was drafted as a field player.
The trainer was combative before the match. “We will look for the best solution with the available players.” Yet after 25 seconds the first goal was already in the net. Defender Eduardo Kau passed his own goalkeeper.
At the halftime signal it was already 7-0 in favor of Benfica.
