The Dutch Health Council recommends making COVID-19 vaccination available to (parents) children aged 5 to 11 years who wish to be vaccinated. Coronavirus causes only very mild symptoms in most children of this age group, but a few children are at risk of severe illness. In addition, there is a risk of serious inflammatory reactions in important body parts. Vaccination may be able to prevent this. Vaccination may also reduce the indirect health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on children. Examples of such adverse effects are restricted access to schools, sports, or social contact with peers. The council notified the Minister of Health and Welfare in an advisory report accordingly.
