Feyenoord are eliminated from the Europa League after losing to AS Roma

Feyenoord were knocked out in Thursday’s UEFA Europa League quarter-finals. The Rotterdamers lost 4–1 at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico and on aggregate he lost 4–2. Igor Paixao scored the only goal for Arne Sloth’s team, while Leonardo Spinazola, Paolo Dybala, Tammy Abraham and Lorenzo Pellegrini scored Roma’s goal.

Arne Slot gave right-winger Alireza Jahanbaksch the starting spot ahead of Igor Paixao, who impressed in the weekend’s win against Cambuur. AS Roma started without forwards Paolo Dybala and Tammy Abraham. Both players were sidelined with injuries in last week’s first leg, which Feyenoord won 1-0.

Georginio Wijnaldum played against his former team but came off with an injury as Stephan El Shaarawy replaced him.

AS Roma hit the post with their first attack of the second half. Nikola Zarevski crossed Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini in the box and slammed him into the post before going for a corner kick.

Roma took the lead in the match and equalized in the 59th minute. Feyenoord failed to clear the ball from the cross and made sure it landed at the feet of Leonardo Spinazzola.

The Stadio Olimpico grew louder and Rome began to rule. But it fell in the eerily silent 81st minute when Feyenoord scored against the flow of play. Sebastian Szymanski hit the ball into the box and Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio followed the trajectory of the ball to keep the goal open before Igor Paixao headed home.

However, Paolo Dybala scored a closing blow for the Rotterdamers to send the match into extra time. The Argentine striker received the ball from Pellegrini and quickly spun it before hitting it high into the far corner.

Feyenoord were given a big chance in the fourth minute of extra time and it fell to who they wanted most. Danilo’s volley was blocked by a Roma defender and fell directly to Santiago’s Jimenez, but the Mexican striker put too much effort into his shot and flew over the goal.

Seven minutes later, Roma scored the decisive third goal. Again, Pellegrini was the playmaker, playing Tammy his perfect pass-through to Abraham. Tammy Abraham crossed it and El Shaarawy slid home.

Feyenoord looked tired but Roma found second gear and it was proven when Roma scored another goal in the 111th minute. Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijureau saves Abraham’s shot from Dybala. The goal was initially awarded offside before a VAR check overturned the decision.

To make matters worse, Jimenez was sent off in the final minute of extra time after a very dangerous high challenge to Gianluca Mancini.

It is the second year in a row that Roma have knocked out Feyenoord in European competition. Roma defeated Slot’s team in the Conference League final in Tirana last season. Feyenoord are now focused on winning the Eredivisie title. The Rotterdamers are eight points behind with his seven games remaining. Roma will face Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals.
