In Bavel (near Breda) a motorist drove on after a collision with a group of cyclists. Two cyclists fell; a 72-year-old man was taken to hospital with a fracture, scrapes and bruises. The other cyclist suffered minor injuries.
According to the police, the sixteen cyclists from Belgium cycled on the road and not on the adjacent bicycle path. The driver of a black Volkswagen Up with a Dutch license plate wanted to pass the group. While overtaking, the motorist probably hit two cyclists. The police are investigating whether there is intent, as the Belgians say.
In the spring it is not only the professional cycling peloton that gets going. According to the cycling association NTFU, there are about 540,000 cyclists active in the Netherlands.
