D66: no Winter Olympics in China for Uyghurs

If China doesn’t change its attitude towards the Uyghurs, the Winter Olympics will have to be moved from China to another country next year. D66 argues for this.

In the radio program News and Co D66 MP Sjoerdsma said that China is committing genocide on the Uyghurs. He spoke of terrible abuses against the Uyghur Muslim minority: “We must not mince words and call it genocide.” GroenLinks and ChristenUnie, among others, agree with this qualification.

Possibly more than a million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities are held in detention camps and detention centers in China’s Xinjiang region. The issue will be discussed in the House of Representatives on Thursday and D66 hopes to get a majority behind it for its position.

Block: no genocide

Until now, Minister Blok does not want to accuse the Chinese of genocide. According to him, there are large-scale human rights violations, such as the imposition of birth restrictions. But he wrote to the House last week that “in order to be classified as genocide it is necessary that it is established [het] has been imposed with genocidal intent “.

The outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs added that for the cabinet rulings by international courts of justice, unambiguous conclusions from scientific research and findings by the UN are leading. “This is not the case at the moment,” he wrote to the House.

The Canadian House of Commons labeled the treatment of the Uyghurs by China last night as genocide and the US government did that earlier. D66 wants Blok to join this.
