The 29-year-old athlete from Utrecht finished third in her 200-meter series and struggled to qualify for the semi-finals, which will be run on Monday evening (Japanese time).

Schippers ran a time of 23.13 and was only 0.01 faster than the German Lisa Marie Kwayie. A photo finish had to provide a definitive answer. The series was won by Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce from Jamaica: 22.22.

Schippers was the top favorite for gold at the Rio Games 5 years ago and felt the silver was a consolation prize, in Tokyo the two-time world champion in the 200 meters has adjusted her expectations. Getting to the final is already a challenge, a medal would be a huge surprise.

Schippers has a double hernia. There is wear and tear between the vertebral discs, which complicates sprint training. There are days when she doesn’t know how to get out of bed because of the pain. Her top speed has suffered; in recent years she has not come close to the times with which she astonished the world in 2015: 10.81 in the 100 meters and 21.63 in the 200 meters.
