The floods in Limburg have been more than a week ago. The water is much lower in most places, but there are still many problems. For example, more than 700 people are still unable to return home.
One of those people is Dani, age 11. His parents are divorced and the house of his father and his mother has been damaged by the water. Furniture is broken and the houses stink inside. Not everything has dried up yet.
Dani and his father therefore live in a hotel. Dani didn’t expect the problems to be this big.
Next to the house, his parents’ restaurant was also flooded. Luckily they got a lot of help cleaning up.
It looks like Dani will be able to live with his mother again next week. His father’s house probably won’t be fully restored until September.
About 2300 houses were damaged by the floods. Some houses are so badly damaged that no one can live in them anymore. 700 families have to live somewhere else temporarily. The municipality is looking for shelter for them.
Especially in Valkenburg there is a lot of damage. That place is located in the valley of a number of Limburg hills. That’s why all the water flowed there. According to experts, it will cost more than 400 million euros to restore everything.
