De Volkskrant did not participate in the party surrounding the Camp David agreements

If something seems too good to be true, it usually is too good to be true. De Volkskrant seems to have been guided by this tiling wisdom in its assessment of the Camp David agreements of 17 September 1978. This was preceded by a weeks-long summit in the country residence of American President Jimmy Carter, which – in addition to the host – was also attended by the Israeli Prime Minister. Menachim Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat participated. All along the media should have been content with the crumbs that were thrown at them every now and then. In this way, the Americans were able to present the result of the conference to the world on Sunday evening, September 17, with maximum effect. One accord provided for the normalization of relations between Israel and Egypt, sworn enemies of yesteryear. The other outlined a comprehensive peace settlement for the entire Middle East, including the Palestinian territories in Gaza and the West Bank.
