He is thus responding to a memo that CDA MP Pieter Omtzigt has drawn up and which came out today. Omtzigt tells about CDA members who scold him behind his back and would oppose him. Omtzigt also writes that certain candidates were asked for their opinion about him. “There are always emotions and collisions,” says De Vries. ,,But statements that people were asked: are you for Hugo or for Pieter? And that it would have determined a place on the list, I can honestly say that it is not the case. In fact, Pieter himself had strong opinions about certain candidates.”
Omtzigt was part of the committee that wrote the election manifesto. He is a well-known CDA member who narrowly lost the battle for the party leadership to De Jonge. As a Member of Parliament, Omtzigt gets stuck in sensitive files and in recent years has often been on a collision course with the cabinet of which his own party is a part. This has ensured that the Christian Democrat has been sitting at home with a burnout for some time. This makes the situation ‘difficult, sensitive and painful at the same time’, says De Vries, who for many years was an important confidant of former Prime Minister Jan-Peter Balkenende.
