Novak Djokovic has reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The defending champion from Serbia beat German Alexander Zverev in four long sets today: 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 7-6. The first placed Djokovic and Zverev, the number 6 on the placement list, were on the track for 3.5 hours.
In the semifinals, Djokovic will compete against Russian sensation Aslan Karatsev, who, as Grand Slam debutant and qualifier, dealt with Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov earlier today.
Djokovic had suffered an abdominal injury earlier in the tournament. In his previous match against the Canadian Milos Raonic, who went down in four sets, Djokovic was little hindered by physical problems. He also made an almost fit impression in the duel with Zverev.
For Djokovic it was his sixth victory against Zverev in eight mutual duels. The eight-time champion beat the erratic German based on quality and character. Especially in the crucial third set, Djokovic showed his mental strength.
Trailing 4-1, he won five games in a row. After the winning point in that set, he cried out with joy and fighting spirit. Zverev did not give up after that disappointing series, however. He quickly took a 3-0 lead, but missed three break opportunities in the fourth game. Then the German was upset again.
In the eighth game there was some recovery, but Djokovic was able to clear two breakpoints again (4-4). At 6-5, Zverev got another set point on the service of the Serbian, who, however, remained upright and then struck in the tiebreaker on his second match point with his 23rd ace.
“I had to get going a bit in the first set”, said Djokovic. “After that I started to serve better and I also moved better on the court. In the fourth set, the nerves on both sides got the upper hand. We pushed each other to the limit. I am quite exhausted now, especially emotionally. ”
