After 28 years and some 40 books, Bracke’s writing career comes to an abrupt end, which started with the successful ‘Steen’. “I don’t want to dwell on the problems I have, but I can’t concentrate anymore,” he says. “Reading is also difficult, I get tired quickly. Of course it is hard that I can no longer exercise my passion. But I have to accept it. ”
Bracke’s books were mandatory for many young people in Dutch lessons. Three of them have since been filmed: ‘Het Engelenhuis’, which was released by Hans Herbots as ‘Bo’, and ‘Black’ and ‘Back’, of which Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah made ‘Black’. “I am happy that I was able to contribute to their success,” says Bracke.
The duo will soon also be filming ‘It won’t hurt anymore’, became known this week. “Great”, says Bracke. “As a film student, Adil already emailed me in 2008 to say that he had written a screenplay for that book. Even though they are hot in Hollywood now, they have remained very humble. When they recently heard that my health was struggling, they even came to visit me. ”
