The annual meeting, known as OneTeam, was last held in Houston in early 2020. That was before the pandemic forced the social media company’s approximately 7,500 employees to work from home.

In addition to deciding not to proceed with the annual OneTeam meeting, the company also plans to limit domestic and international business travel. Twitter has previously announced that it is pausing the recruitment of new staff to reduce costs. The employees will also talk for the first time on Thursday with Elon Musk, who wants to take over Twitter for $ 44 billion (about 42 billion euros). According to business newspaper The Wall Street Journal, the chief executive of the electric car maker Tesla will confirm that he wants to buy the company.

Twitter employees are concerned about the takeover by Musk, who has publicly criticized the company and previously temporarily paused the takeover. Musk also told his Tesla employees earlier this month that they must work at least 40 hours a week in the office. “If you don’t show up, we’ll assume you’ve resigned,” he said.
