Dream week for hand bikers Valize and Haenen: European and world champion

“This is so clever what he is doing now. Because the pressure was on him,” continues Van der Wal. Valize, who has just turned 26, is one of the candidates who can be delegated to Tokyo for the Netherlands at the end of August. But there are only six tickets and five of them have already been filled.

“We have a very strict internal selection policy. Whether he is sure now? No, I can’t say that yet. There will be others in action in the coming days. He has to wait and see.”

Revalidation

Valize’s left lower leg had to be amputated a few years ago. During his rehabilitation, he came into contact with hand cycling. “That got me through it,” he said earlier in an interview with De Limburger.

“I was made aware of it by the rehabilitation team of Adelante in Hoensbroek. When I was there for the first time, I immediately liked it. Before that I had never thought of doing a Paralympic sport. No, in fact: three years ago I didn’t even know this sport existed.”
