‘Drunk Nainggolan drove 56 km/h too fast and has to get a driving license again’ | Sport

Former Belgian international Radja Nainggolan risks a one-year driving ban, retaking his driving tests and a €420 fine for a serious speeding offense and drink-driving this summer in Antwerp. That became apparent today during the handling of the case by the police court. Nainggolan was not present himself, he will play tonight with Antwerp in Frankfurt.

Nainggolan was stopped late at night on the Antwerp Scheldt quays at the end of August after he overtook another vehicle with his car at high speed and crossed a solid white line. The police needed a – corrected – speed of 106 kilometers per hour to overtake Nainggolan while the speed limit there is 50 km / h and the footballer turned out to be slightly under the influence of alcohol.

Because Nainggolan has a history in both areas, the prosecutor is asking for a significant driving ban. In 2017, he was banned from driving for a month because he had been behind the wheel with alcohol.

Nainggolan was represented at the hearing by lawyer Omar Souidi. He questioned the precise measured speed and made a long plea for a driving ban with a postponement, so that Nainggolan would have the chance to show that this will not happen again.

“It was a unique moment, because he had only just returned to Antwerp after playing abroad for sixteen years and he had gone out for a drink with some childhood friends,” says Souidi. ,,Radja has a big heart and has not forgotten his origins, which is why that evening was so special. But he is ashamed of the facts.”

According to Omar Souidi, Nainggolan needs his car to take the children to school and then get to training with Antwerp on time, and to visit his wife who is staying in Italy for follow-up treatment after she had cancer.

The verdict will follow on December 16.
