Nurse says he killed 20 coronavirus patients: prosecutor

A nurse suspected of killing several patients at Assen’s Wilhelmina hospital has admitted to killing at least 20 coronavirus patients.

Theodoor V allegedly made comments in various conversations with other health care providers, one of whom alerted hospital officials and an investigation was launched, the department said in a statement.

According to broadcaster NOS, the man made comments to staff while receiving treatment at a regional mental health clinic in Drenthe, and it was the facility that contacted authorities.

According to the NOS, V’s remarks were so serious that they considered them worthy of breaking the confidentiality rules.

V was arrested at his home in Veenhuizen three weeks ago and was detained for another month on Thursday.

Investigations into the reported fatalities are still ongoing. The investigation will include checking the men’s working hours to see if it matches the patient’s death. “Experts are currently investigating whether there are discrepancies in medical records that may match the suspect’s statements,” the spokesperson said.

The investigation is expected to be completed at the end of June. It is still unclear whether any patients have actually been identified. The investigation period is from March 2020 to May 2022 for him.
