Dutch Crown Princess Evicted from Student Residence Over Security Concerns – Expat Guide to The Netherlands

The Dutch royal family announced Thursday that 18-year-old Crown Princess Katarina Amalia has been moved from her student residence in Amsterdam to the royal palace after her safety was threatened.

The Dutch heir to the throne was out only to attend classes at the University of Amsterdam.

King Willem-Alexander spoke of the “extremely difficult” situation during an official visit to Sweden.

“It has a huge impact on her life. It means she doesn’t live in Amsterdam and can’t really go out,” Queen Maxima told Dutch outlet AD.

The princess returned to the Huis Ten Bosch royal palace in The Hague.

“The consequences are very difficult for her. Like any student, she doesn’t have a student life…it’s not good to see your child living like that. You can go, but that’s all,” said Queen Maxima.

Princess Amalia is about to complete her bachelor’s degree in politics, psychology, law and economics.

There were no details on the nature of the threat.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte described the situation as “horrible” and said he was “extremely worried”, according to Dutch public TV NOS.

Justice and Security Minister Dylan Jesilgos Zegerius tweeted in Dutch: “I assure you that our security services are working day and night to ensure her safety.”

The popular newspaper De Telegraaf reported in September that security had been tightened because the crown princess was feared to be a target for criminals.
