In Windeck, Germany, just east of Cologne, a 69-year-old Dutchman died on Saturday after falling from a raised footpath. According to the local authorities, he plunged about 40 meters into the depth. According to German media, the man was on holiday with his wife for a few days.

It is unclear how the accident could have happened. The accident is said to have taken place on Saturday afternoon around 3.15 pm on the Siegsteig, a special walking route along the river Sieg. The path sometimes goes up there.

After her husband fell down the slope, the woman alerted emergency services. They did not immediately succeed in finding the man and the woman. Ultimately, based on the location of the woman’s mobile phone, the local wrote Rhein-Sieg Anzeiger. A rescue helicopter also assisted in the search from the air.

When firefighters found the man, a CPR attempt was started. He was then carried upstairs on a stretcher. An emergency doctor determined the man’s death there. In the evening, the detectives also arrived on the scene. Spiritual assistance was arranged for the woman.

Earlier this month, another Dutch hiker was killed in a similar accident. That tragic incident took place in the Vosges. According to French media, he also fell tens of meters down.
