Dutch parliamentarians call for more checks against Romania, Bulgaria ahead of Schengen vote

A majority of Dutch parliamentarians voted in favor of a motion not to take “irreversible steps” to allow Romania and Bulgaria into open border areas of the Schengen Agreement pending further investigation into corruption and organized crime.

Created by Jeroen van Wijngaarden of the ruling VVD, the motion was supported by various parties including the Socialist Party, BIJ1 and the far right.

The government has long opposed Romania and Bulgaria joining.

The Dutch vote comes two days after the European Parliament passed a motion calling on Schengen member states to allow them access to the EU free movement area by the end of the year.
