Family skiing: How to maximise the fun-factor

For any non-skiers out there, the thought sounds absolutely ridiculous. After all, sending little ones rushing down a mountain in the middle of winter sounds anything but what a family holiday should be.

However, as millions of families will testify, this is the definition of fun. Cast your eyes over the resorts in the French Alps and you’ll see umpteen families enjoying the conditions – and the kids revelling in their new-found hobby.

Of course, there are a few more considerations that need to be looked at, that certainly wouldn’t be thought of with a classic beach break. Through today, we’ll now have a look at some of these factors in further detail.

Always check the weather

There are two strands to this first point. Firstly, make sure that you’re traveling at the right time of the season. The very worst thing you can do is promise the kids mountains of snow, only to get there and see the snow cannons set to full blast as they try and make amends for the feeble conditions.

Secondly, it’s about the day itself. Wherever you are based, make sure you check the snow forecast before you travel. Another classic faux pas is to turn up in the middle of a blizzard. Sure, it’s fun for the first few minutes, but things soon get far too chilly for little fingers and it’s a wasted trip.

Turn to a resort with other activities as well as the skiing

If you’re staying in a resort for a week, there’s a fair chance that the snow might not hold out for the entire time. This is especially true if you have very young children who need to take a break every now and then.

Therefore, it’s worth turning to a resort that has other activities on offer. This might be anything from sledging and snowboarding to swimming pools and spas. This way, you can still have a fantastic holiday, even if the skiing conditions aren’t quite ideal.

This is a difficult one, as it depends on the makeup of your family. For example, young families might want to stay closer to the action, so they’re not wasting time getting to and from the slopes.

Older families, on the other hand, might prefer a more sedate resort where they can enjoy the views and the scenery as well as the skiing itself.

There’s no right or wrong answer here, it’s simply a case of knowing your family and what they want from a holiday.

Invest in an instructor

We’ve coined the term “invest”, as it really can make or break your getaway. After all, the last thing you want is to be stuck on the slopes with a bunch of grumpy children.

The great thing about having an instructor is that they can make the skiing experience much more fun for the whole family. They can teach the kids the basics in a fun and engaging way, as well as show you a few new tricks to make the most of the slopes.

Of course, this all comes at a cost, but in terms of offering value for your holiday – it’s a no-brainer.

Avoid the busiest slopes

This is one for the more experienced skiers out there. When you’re on your way up the mountain, it can be tempting to head straight for the busiest slopes. After all, that’s where all the action is, right?

Wrong. The busiest slopes are often the most dangerous, as there are so many people trying to fit into such a small space. This increases the chances of an accident, which is the last thing you want on your family holiday.

Instead, try and find some of the quieter slopes further away from the resort. Not only will these be safer, but they’ll also be much more enjoyable as you won’t have to deal with the crowds.
