Edwin and Kirsten exchange lambs for wild animals in Ik Departure: ‘More exciting than expected’ | show

An emigration to South Africa brings with it some other obstacles than the stories where the I leavecameras in Europe are often present. The latest episode shows how Kirsten, who exchanged the lambs in the backyard for wild animals with her husband Edwin, is terrified when a giraffe comes to watch. “I don’t like it anymore, go back!”

Their grown sons had seen the emigration coming from miles away. After all, the photos of Ruben and Mendel hanging in the toilet had already been replaced in recent years by those of elephants and baobab trees. Edwin and Kirsten thought it would be great to exchange the meadows near Bennekom for a game park in Hoedspruit, South Africa.

For 250,000 euros they took over two lodges: one to rent out, the other to live in themselves. “The animals come right up to your swimming pool”, Edwin beams, when they can finally move after a year of corona misery. Until he sees that the pool needs to be cleaned, because there is zebra poo in it.

It still takes some getting used to, instead of goats and sheep in the backyard a parade of wild animals. “All those strange noises,” says Edwin. Kirsten sneaks closer to see where the roar is coming from. “This is a bit exciting.” They also enjoy it. Monkeys come to their lodge to steal bananas, the couple see impalas, zebras, boars and a leopard. They quickly feel welcome at the local church community and they receive help with their renovation through the help of others.

However, when after a few months son Ruben comes to visit, Kirsten is terrified. A giraffe walks over to the car they are in on their way home. The animal does not seem impressed by the car. The men think it’s funny, but Kirsten screams. “Go back, go back!” she yells at her husband who is behind the wheel. “Ah! I don’t like it anymore! Go back!”

But when, after the official opening, they hear guests getting up before dawn to listen to the jackals from the patio, they thoroughly enjoy it. Edwin: ,,Those are the presents.”
