NEC has joined the last eight in the KNVB Cup tournament. The Nijmegen team dealt with the few opportunities extremely effectively and won 2-1 in the far north against FC Groningen, which fell short with the elimination.
Calvin Verdonk gave the strongly started guests the lead after ten minutes by following a cross from Javier Vet with a controlled volley into the far corner. Groningen answered with a wave of attacks, which also led to the necessary opportunities.
For example, Paulos Abraham headed wide in a promising position, NEC goalkeeper Danny Vukovic managed to tap a neat header from Bjorn Meijer from the short corner and Ivan Marquéz just managed to prevent Michael de Leeuw from hitting. On the stroke of half-time, the home team got what it deserved after a quick counter: De Leeuw hit hard.
Immediately after the break, Abraham put his captain in position again, but De Leeuw didn’t get any further than a drop-off. A miss with consequences, because a minute later Mikkel Duelund found the farthest corner on the other side after a one-two with Vet: 1-2.
Groningen turned the thumbscrews again and saw a shot from 18-year-old Meijer being turned over by Vukovic, who was twice his age, who was also in the way with a bang from Tomas Suslov. However, the frantic efforts of the home team did not yield many more opportunities.
