Eight injured after ‘sharp object’ attack in Swedish town, police assume terror | Abroad

In Sweden, eight people were injured in an attack with a sharp object. The perpetrator, probably a man in his twenties, is said to have been shot in the leg by the police. He was taken to hospital. Two people would be seriously injured.

The attack took place in Vetlanda, a town in southern Sweden. The police suspect that this is a terrorist crime. A number of people have been transported by ambulance, a police spokesman told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. “Some are seriously injured, others slightly.”

There is not yet any clarity about the possible motive of the perpetrator. According to the Swedish newspaper, the injured perpetrator has not yet been questioned. Train traffic in the vicinity of the town, which has 13,000 inhabitants, is said to have stopped.

Previous attacks

Sweden has been the target of an attack at least twice since 2010. In December 2010, a man committed a suicide attack in central Stockholm. He was killed, passers-by were slightly injured.

In 2017, a radicalized Muslim drove a stolen truck over pedestrians in Stockholm, killing five people. The rejected asylum seeker from Uzbekistan was sentenced to life in 2018.
